The story opens in Helium where Kantos Kan is rallying his comrades to search the missing Dejah Thoris and debate where John Carter is responsible for her disappearance. Mors Kajak, Dejah Thoris’ father, enters and further motivates the men of Helium to find his daughter. Meanwhile, John Carter must battle his way to Stara Kan, where a final battle takes place.
